Joe Igbokwe, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, believes the ruling party’s indirect primary option for the upcoming presidential election is preferable for former Lagos State governor and APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu.
Igbokwe, a long-time Tinubu supporter, said this in a news conference on Wednesday, just after the APC National Executive Council, led by Abdullahi Adamu, met in Abuja and decided to abandon the consensus model in favor of the indirect presidential primary system.
Tinubu would defeat his opponents in the primary election, according to Igbokwe, who is an advisor to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, because he has “deep structures” therefore Indirect presidential primary better for Asiwaju Tinubu’s ambition.
According to reports, the APC has around 7,800 delegates around the country. The APC also announced on Wednesday that its Special Convention for Presidential Primaries will take place from May 30 to June 1, 2022, according to news reports. In an indirect primary, party members elect delegates who vote on behalf of the party’s candidates.
On April 23, the party announced that nomination and expression of interest forms for various electoral posts would be available for purchase from April 23 through May 6, 2022. The APC has set up N100 million for presidential nomination and expression of interest forms.
Tinubu, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige, and Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi are among the APC presidential candidates thus far.
